Matrescence

Have you heard of this before? Do you know what it means?

“Matrescence is the physical, emotional, hormonal and social transition to becoming a mother.” This impacts our biology, our identity, our beliefs, our independence, our purpose.

When we become a mother we encounter a time of change, transition and transformation, and this can be a hard thing to navigate if we don’t understand what is going on. It’s easy to understand the changes that go on during adolescence, and the awkward phase children can be in before becoming an adult, and it is the same when a mother is going through matrescence. It is seen to be a time of happiness and joy, however, the transition into parenthood can be both happy and also scary, as you feel like you loose control of the life you have always known. Many emotions can co exist as a mother experiences matrescence.

This is where the role of a Doula can help. We are there to help you navigate this time of change and transition. We are there to support you through the feelings and emotions that you experience when you become a mother. In the early days where things can feel overwhelming, a Doula is by your side helping you to process and understand the experience you are currently going through, and to provide you with the support you need.

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but never the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
